“Ziora in Igbo means show the world and it was born from the need to reclaim African narratives in mental health and health systems”

- Akachi Uba

  • Ziora Health was born from a simple but urgent truth: mental health in African communities has long been caught between two extremes—pathologized in one world, silenced in another.

As a Nigerian-American medical student with a foundation in public health and health administration, I’ve witnessed the quiet toll of this disconnect. Cultural nuances overlooked, systems underdeveloped, and care inaccessible to the people who needed it most.

Ziora Health exists to bridge that gap.

We reimagine psychiatry as a tool of cultural empowerment, system reform, and human dignity. Through essays, research commentary, digital storytelling, and advocacy, Ziora Health reflects the realities of the communities it serves, while shaping a future where mental health care is both accessible and culturally resonant.

  • I am Akachi Uba, a future psychiatrist committed to bridging U.S clinical expertise with African health systems transformation.

I hold a B.Sc in Global & Public Health Sciences from Cornell University. A masters in Health Administration from Icahn School of Medicine and another in Public Health from Upstate Medical University. I am currently completing my Doctorate in Medicine at St. George’s University of which I study in the Caribbean, do clinical rotations in the United Kingdom, and residency training across the United States.

My interdisciplinary and intercontinental training has expanded my gaze and shaped how I see psychiatric care and healthcare at large.

When I’m not studying or writing, I love exploring new cities, reading African fiction, and catching up with family and friends.
